I've seen those around here, they're very strange, but I don't remember what they are or what they're called. Email it to your local county extension office, they'll know.
Yes, Janice, it is a gall. Some are nests made by gall flies and others form from bacteria found on the plant. If it bothers you cut if off but I don't know it it matters to leave it. They seem to especially love Junipers.
I hope this is the correct ANSWER, I believe it is a pine stem rust gall, a tree disease. You might want to contact a tree specialist about it as the disease will spread. Excellent photo!!
Looks like a twine-y hairball to me?! How it got in the tree, though is anyone's guess :D Also reminds me of a burnt marshmallow (just the way I like 'em!), but again - it's twine...
Ew, lol. I can't even say nice picture :) Maybe it's an owl pellet... unless it's attached to the tree itself, which it looks like it is. Good luck finding the answer.
If you know what this thing is and could tell me then I'd have the answer to my question. Found this in my pine tree. Looked all around the tree and didn't see anything else that looked like it. I think it's kinda gross looking, lol!
