I use to put hedge apples (or green brains as I call them) in the basement they cut the spider population about 90%!!! They work, here they sell them in the grocery stores int he fall.
If the hedge apples are what I think they are, I've always heard the same thing with people putting them out to repell bugs. Are they like softball size & green and not smooth?
Gorgeous photo! I don't know the reason but a guess would be that electricity rates are outrageous & firewood is getting harder to find so this would be an easy solution to both problems.
I just thought I would show you a hedge row. During the depression President Rosevelt (If I remember correctly) urged farmers to plant hedge rows (hedge trees) or wind breaks. The purpose was to help with soil erosion, as in the dirty thirties or the dust bowl. Now, the hedge rows are being pulled out one by one and the wood used up for fire wood. I don't know why they are no longer useful as a wind break. Most likey advances in the way farmers work their land using terraces. Now, those hedge trees drop what I call hedge apples, or hedge balls int he late summer or early fall. Some people believe that tose hedge balls will kill or keep bugs out of their house. A friend was visiting from ND and she carried a bucket full of those hedge balls home saying that people up there buy them for a dollar a piece, LOL. They are a nuisance to us!
