This is SO much more beautiful than our White River. I say that but I haven't really been all along it. In 1997, it was listed as one of the United States' most threatened rivers. In 1999, the West Fork experienced a massive Fish kill that spread for 50 miles for an estimated loss of 4.6 million fish (187 tons). There has been great effort recently to clean it up! As long as I can remember I've always heard not to fish or swim in it! SAD!
Believe it or not, White River was a major form of transportation in northern Arkansas. The Bull Shoals hydroelectric dam completed in 1951 changed all that. Now it's one of the best trout fishing rivers in the US, and the primary means of transportation is a flat bottomed John Boat. I love it, I grew up close to this river, my grandad had a trout fishing dock, and it's just a part of me.
