Brace Face, Metal Mouth, Robo-Jaw Those were just a few of the wonderful names that I was called all through high school. The memories of wearing braces hasn’t faded all that much even if it has been over more than 10 years since they have come off. I don’t have all that many photos with my braces on because even though it was my Mom’s bright idea for me to get them she always used to tell me “smile with your mouth closed.” But the few that I have it was very evident that yes “I had a metal mouth.” I remember going for those bi-weekly wire tightenings, wearing the rubber-bands and that head gear that had to be worn at night. Rolling over in my sleep with that on was a rude awakening, nothing like formed metal pushing into your face at like 3 a.m. and not to mention you looked like you could receive HBO while wearing it. The impressions were the worst part of getting the braces and YES! Yes I bit the orthodontist while getting my impressions. Not on purpose but I bit him. From 16 to 20 I endured the pain and the taunts of having braces, but would I change that part of growing up? NEVER, I have a beautiful smile now, even if it did feel like torture for four years.
