This is for week 24 of Debby's Dare and the Once Upon a Time challenge. The year is 1962, so I didn't journal about fads and fashion, but rather, what memories of childhood came to mind as I looked at these pics, which I found in an old keepsake box. The journaling reads:
I was a child of the 60's.
It was a time of innocence. Of neighborhood kids gathering in the empty field next door to play a game of fly ball. Of grabbing a piece of chalk to play a spontaneous game of hopscotch on the driveway. Of walking down to the grade school to play a game of marbles or to climb on the monkey bars, carefully avoiding the cracks on the sidewalk, so as to avoid “breaking our mother's back”. Of flying kites in the schoolyard on a windy day, each of us running as fast as we could to get them off the ground. Of playing statues on a summer evening under the yard light, fireflies flitting around us in the dark. Of collecting those fireflies in a jar, only to let them go again before we headed in for our baths. Of setting up the sprinkler and racing through it, squealing at the cold goodness of the water on a hot day.Of playing house in the garage, our bikes creating all the walls of our house, then making mudpies and eating hazelnuts on leaf plates. Of making forts in the far back yard, known locally as “the jungle” because dad allowed half of it to grow untended. Of climbing the oak tree or making tents of blankets over the clothesline in the backyard. Of picking the first wintergreens of the summer, delighting when we found wintergreen berries. Of picking wild raspberries and blueberries and eating them all before we got back home. Of casually walking into a neighborhood house without knocking - and upsetting nobody. And after the day was done, of curling up under the covers with my doll to dream of all the adventures awaiting the next day…and the next…and the next. For such is the work of childhood.
