While the photograph makes this look large, you are looking at a small iris mat (about 4 in. in length). I wanted to try the iris folding technique without folding the strips, thereby creating less bulk behind the frame. I also wanted to use ONLY scraps (I cut no fresh paper for the iris). Well, without the folding, you lose some of the texture and the pattern got pretty darn busy, obscuring the photo. WHITE GEL PEN to the rescue! I highlighted the edges of the iris and then hand doodled the edge of the oval. I think it worked pretty effectively...oh, and this is a photo of my dad and my grandma c. 1943 or 1944. :)
