Canada What??? That's what I was saying to people who wished me a “Happy Canada Day!” On July 1st of every year, Canadians celebrate Canada Day. Canada became a country on July 1, 1867. Towns and cities have parades, fireworks, events, etc. Every year, I walk over to Thomson Memorial Park to check out the festivities. This year (2009), the events did not take place. Why? Toronto's garbage collector's and other city workers are on strike, and because they are on strike, the parks were closed down. Some parks are opened as temporary dump sites until the strike comes to an end. Keep in mind that I still had a great time on Canada Day. My Uncle Jack came over to our house and spent the entire day with us. It was great to see my uncle and we had a delicious dinner of barbecued chicken and ribs, baked potatoes, corn on the cobs, and then apple pie for dessert.

*Note: I am not on either side. However, I am disappointed in this, because the historical museums that are run by the city are closed. I was looking forward to touring some of them. I am also disappointed that the city did not plan a Canada Day festivity.
