Oh, Betty! WHAT BEAUTIFUL LO this is!!! And, HOW WONDERFUL FOR YOU TO SHARE IT WITH ALL OF US. It brings back a lot of memories for me, but there are probably some here who have wondered about aprons. Thanks for educating all of us! Your journaling is wonderful, and I LOVE ALL THE PHOTOS you've taken! Also, your design is so very well planned out, especially the colors, and I LOVE THE JOURNALING AND ESPECIALLY THE PICTURES OF THE TWO OLD PATTERNS (I'VE NEVER HEARD OF THE "ADVANCE" BRAND! ....wow"!). Have you ever read the poem called "Grandma's Apron"? I love that poem! I got it from dennydavis.net. I imagine you've used this website with lots of poems, quotes, etc, for scrapbookers before.
Here's the poem:
Grandma's Apron
I gaze at my Modern kitchen
Appliances by the score.
but nary a one a handy,
As the Apron Grandma wore.
Huge, made of sturdy cotton
Drab colored so spots wouldn't show.
Held secure by a waist band
Tied with a ribbon and a bow.
The best multi-purpose appliance
The world will ever know.
A supporter for the toddlers first steps
A hider for Childish fears.
A wrapper on chilly evenings
A remover of Childish tears.
A basket for every collection
grain, eggs or baby chicks.
The flowers for the mantel
Cobs, kindling or buffalo chips.
The vegetables from the garden
Or sweet corn from the field.
A protector from hot pans or dishes
At the stove a good heat shield.
A communication signal
to the workers on the farm.
To say that it is meal time
Or to carry an alarm.
A driver of fowl from a garden
or flies from an open door.
The dust from the parlor table
or crumbs to the kitchen floor.
A curtain for shadeless windows,
A frost guard for tender plants.
A cradle for sleepy babies
A tanner for impish scamps...
These are some of the uses
of that implement of yore.
That best of all piece of equipment
The Apron that Grandmother wore.
So I gaze at my modern Kitchen
A gadget for every chore
and admit they are not as convenient
as that Apron that Grandma wore.
Fantastic!!!!!!! Love all the pp's & embellies you used!!!! I always wear an apron when I cook............ I've ruined to many clothes & learned my lesson!
Oh I love that journaling!!! All those pictures are so cool!!! How true about the apron!! The all purpose clothing. this whole lo is perfect for this paper. I love those old pattern packages too!!One question.....who is holding the veggies? Oh, and the germ thing, How true. LOL!!!
What a great way to display your aprons for pictures -on the line. Great story and I was thinking about how people would think of the germs today and then you mentioned at the end. Had to laugh! I remember those great aprons and the love of the women wearing them!
These are such wonderful layout. And your journaling reminds me of when I was a child. I have only a few I made years ago and I do use them for alot of what you said.
Wonderful layout, memorializing a time when housewives made and wore aprons. My mother used to add hemmed scraps from old bath towels to the waist seam. She used this as a combination hand towel and pot holder.
Oh Betty, this is such a beautiful work of art you have put together.. Seriously. And you couldn't have chose a better theme for this paper.. For the first time in my life I actually want my own apron now!!! Thanks so much for sharing, fave!
