we went to Maui during prime whale watching season. humpback whales go through the warmer shallow areas close to the islands october to march, i believe mostly to mate and then birth and teach their young etc. our friend got these shots from the beach with his zoom lens. you can go on whale watching boat tours but we got the best view right from the beach!
the middle and bottom right photos appears to be a mother and calf, we're not sure if she was giving birth to it or not but when we did go on a boat tour the expert on board said they did spot a mother give birth on that day in that area...how cool!
notice the little tiny tail, and judging by the way mom's fins are pointing she is on her back
