Presque Isle Lighthouse: French explorers recognized the intrinsic value of the harbor and in 1753 constructed Fort Presque Isle on the mainland near the harbor entrance.

In 1870 a new lighthouse was commissioned to replace the Erie Land Light. Work began in September, 1872, and was completed on July 1, 1827. The 40-foot tower was built of brick “five courses thick,” to provide for protection from the storms of Lake Erie. In 1896 the tower was raised to 57 feet. Though square on the outside, the inside of the tower is circular and supports a spiral staircase, forged in Pittsburgh and barged to Erie. The cost of the lighthouse was $15,000.

In 1896 the height of the tower was increased 17 feet, 4 inches to produce a local plane of around 57 feet.
