I took a break from the baby books to do a quick BOM page of my life before kids. This layout is about my first 10K race. Which, as it turned out, was also my last 10K race, lol. The pic in the upper R is my friend (left) and me after the race. The pic in the lower R is during the race: 40,000 participants.

I've never been a runner, but took on this project in 2004 as my New Year's resolution. That January, a local running club was sponsoring a beginners running class, leading to the Cooper River Bridge Run on April 3. This meant, of course, that the training was outside in the dead and dark of winter. Crazy resolutions! When I began training, I could run only a couple blocks without breathing heavily, clasping my side and slowing to a walk. I could not imagine running continuously for 6.2 miles. But I was encouraged by the fact that Oprah herself had done this same 10K and had run it in under an hour. Surely, I could beat Oprah! As it turned out, ole Oprah bested my time by a couple minutes, but, for me, crossing that finish line was still a beautiful moment and I wept with joy. I was a runner.

For this page, I wanted to use the shoe lace from the Brooks sneakers I'd worn in the race, but those laces were too long. So, I used some from my son's old Stride Rites instead. Perfect length. The shoe eyelets are page reinforcers that are used to keep paper from tearing out of a three-ring binder. The alphas and chipboard are Basic Grey.

I did my own version of the Ugly Paper challenge here, choosing the ugliest piece of paper from my own stash. I really love the BG Lime Rickey collection but this one paper (my background paper) is so loud and busy and so not my style. But somehow the vibrancy of it makes the brown cardstock pop and sort of coordinates well with the multi-colored runners in the bottom photo. Feedback or suggestions? Thanks for looking.
