There’s a hidden treasure that I’ve discovered that I’m so happy to share with you. It’s a little island of 2.3 square miles (8 miles long) in Sarasota, FL named, “Siesta Key”. This is my little piece of paradise for many reasons. Obviously the beach! But, Oh! What a beach this is. Renowned for its powdery white sand, “Crescent Beach” was entered in the World Sand Challenge in 1987, and awarded for having the world’s “finest and whitest” sand. Robin Leech of “Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous” quickly found this beach awarding the titles of, “softest sand, whitest sand, and cleanest beach” in the USA in the 1990’s. I ALWAYS bring home bottles of this sand from my empty water bottles. It travels very well and looks very nice underneath my candles and the beautiful seashells that you can find in the early morning on Turtle Beach. I like to remember my vacations in this pristine place as often as I can and it reminds me to look forward to returning here as often as I can. In fact, it is my goal to retire to this community, but I need to overcome my fear of the hurricanes first!
I’m very fortunate that my dad lives in Sarasota and has a boat that we thoroughly enjoy. A highlight for me is always to find “Mooch”, a dolphin that will eat sardines from your hand! I’m very fortunate that my dad lives in Sarasota and has a boat that we thoroughly enjoy. A highlight for me is always to find “Mooch”, a dolphin that will eat sardines from your hand! You don’t have to look too far though. All that you have to do is bang on the side of the boat and he’s happy to come see what you have for him! He’s been living in the same inter-coastal waterway near Venice, FL for over 20 years now. You can also find other schools of dolphins and manatees frolicking in the gulf and bay waters. You just can’t see that kind of think in Pittsburgh!
I strongly recommend considering this location for your next vacation spot, and I guarantee you that you will not be disappointed! If you do visit, please don’t miss “Phillippi Creek Oyster Bar Restaurant.” (It’s a bit of a tourist trap, but the locals enjoy it too!) Another fun place is the “Daiquiri Dock” Restaurant. You can walk there from the beach whenever you need a Pina Colada, or if you’d like to try one of the other 51 flavors of frozen drinks they have spinning around in their frozen fruity delicious machines that seems to scream my name whenever I get within a 10-mile radius of the joint! It’s a ton of fun there, and the food’s pretty good too (if I remember correctly! LOL!!!)
Ralph always makes fun of me because wherever I go when we’re there, I always order Grouper. It seems to be abundant there; and it’s so hard to find at home. “Captain Curt’s” is a cute little place just across the South Bridge. They are very reasonable and the perfect place to enjoy a grouper sandwich and a bucket of steamed oysters with a couple of beers on a hot “vacation” day. Even though I’ve never been out of the country, from the moment those exotic parrots greet me at the airport, along with all the native birds you see inland and on the beaches, I always feel like I’ve escaped the “real world” and have always enjoyed vacationing at Siesta Key. I hope you can experience my personal paradise one day soon!
