The Morning After - We Were There

Picture left is the space shuttle at lift off. The picture on the right is taken the next morning from the very same spot.

Two Great Days in History

July 16, 1969 – Launch of the Apollo 11

Bill and I had been dating for a couple months when he asked me to go to Titusville with him to see the launch of the Apollo 11.

Since the launch was to take place at 9:32 AM, it meant we had to leave Miami at 2:00AM to be in Titusville in time for the launch. My mother made it very clear that I wasn't going anywhere at 2:00AM with my boyfriend and Bill's mother informed him that he wasn't going anywhere at 2:00AM with me. However, both mothers were agreeable if we had a chaperone. Bill's 12-year old sister, Betsy, agreed to go with us to keep us out of trouble.

Just moments before the countdown I had to go to the ladies room (none available, only porta-potties) so Bill accompanied me to the facilities. I was just coming out when the countdown started! Another few seconds and I would have missed the launch!

After the launch Bill took us to Cocoa Beach where he and I enjoyed a nice swim in the ocean.

August 28, 2009 – Launch of the Space Shuttle Discovery

The Space Shuttle Discovery was scheduled to be a night launch. Bill had never seen a launch at night and neither Joe nor I had ever seen a shuttle launch at all so we decided to take a short road trip to Titusville.

After a 2-hour drive from Ocala to Titusville we checked into our hotel and then picked out our spot to watch the launch, right at the edge of the water across from the Space Center. We hadn't eaten in hours and we were starving. Joe and Bill had a Burger King Jr. Whopper but I was too excited to eat anything!

The launch was spectacular! It was definitely the thrill of a lifetime – a moment I will never forget. A moment none of us will ever forget!
