neat looking birds. They probably are picking up gravel - they use it to help break down the seeds and other food that they eat.

11-27-09...The HISTORY of the Lewis's Woodpecker goes back to the early 1800's when the Lewis & Clark Expedition came West. Meriwether Lewis is credited with discovering the "black woodpecker" so it was named after him. There is a large colony of them that live in the Oak trees around my house. They land in the driveway & pick up small pieces of gravel or at least that's what I think they're doing. In this photo there are 18. [PB277393]
