When I was 4 years old, I was with my parents at a holiday party thrown by a friend of theirs who was the builder of our house. Someone, I don't remember who, took me (without my parents) up what seemed like a scary dark flight of stairs to see this man's mother -- this is all a very vague memory. Anyway, this little old woman fussed over me and gave me this little tiny carved pig. I don't know if it was really the first ornament of my own, but it's always been special to me. This poor little ugly pig -- what does a pig have to do with Christmas, anyway? -- has been the FIRST ornament on the tree ever since. When I moved away, it came with me -- and my daughter knows we don't start decorating until the pig gets a special spot on the tree. It's TRADITION.
