From the entrance gate there were no more vehicles – we had to walk a little way to get to the actual ruins.
We walked past the little vendors selling postcards, books, hand-carved cameos, and miscellaneous Pompeii souvenirs. We walked past concession stands selling fast food, little pizzas, water, and soft drinks. We walked past all the vendors selling umbrellas and rain gear, and then we walked past the “last chance” bathrooms. Then the road took a bit of a turn like a pull-over on the highway to view a scenic area. I walked to the edge and the view took my breath away.
It was a whole city. It was huge and it was awesome. It was everything I could have ever imagined it would be and more! All it needed was some early Romans walking around in their togas with their sheep and oxen. I was looking at a place where civilization existed over 2,300 years ago and even though it was in ruins there was no mistaking, it was the place where an ancient civilization had worked and played and lived. A civilization made up of the very richest and wealthiest. Many of the structures had been vacation homes to the very elite of society.
It was also a city of many bakeries, shops, brothels, bath houses and places to worship including temples for Isis, Apollo, Jupiter and other Greek and Roman mythological gods.
