The BASILICA is pictured in the two photograph at the bottom of this page. It is the oldest and most important public building in the city. Built between 120 and 78 BC., it is the best example in Pompeii of pre-Roman architecture. In the beginning it was also a covered market, but in the last century AD it became the seat of the law courts (handing down civil and commercial judgments). The main entrance to the Basilica was from the
Forum and included a double portico with no less than five doorways.

The drawing to the left shows the inside of the Basilica as it appeared 2,000 years ago. You can see the area with the open roof which was like an inside courtyard. The building portion of the Basilica in the photos below is the Tribunal which is behind the open roof area shown in the drawing. There are low parts of the columns in front in the photos below which I think are all that are left of the ornate open area in the drawing.
