In September 1960, just two months short of my 12th birthday, Hurricane Donna blew through Florida, after having moved across the islands of the Caribbean and before affecting every state on the East Coast. According to Wikipedia, Donna holds the distinction of maintaining major hurricane status (Category 3 or better) for the longest period of time. From tropical depression to her dissipation, she roamed the Atlantic for 17 days. Because Donna was a slow-moving storm, she dumped 10-12 inches of water on the southern half of Florida and caused 364 deaths and 900 million dollars of damage (1960 USD).

I know these facts now, but as an 11-year-old, I just wanted to stay up to “see the hurricane” when it hit during the wee hours of the morning of September 10. Our situation was a bit precarious, as we lived on a lake. Although we didn’t expect our house to be flooded with lake water, my parents put our furniture on blocks as a precautionary measure. I didn’t get to stay up for the hurricane, but we awoke the next morning to our own version of Waterworld. Our house was completely surrounded by water, so much water that we could row a small boat completely around the house and had great fun doing so. The water never came into the house, but it was level with the step onto our back porch. When Daddy surveyed the encroaching water, he said he wouldn’t worry until our dock went under water. It never did, to his great delight. Later, however, we discovered it hadn’t submerged because all the time it was floating. That story has become a family favorite that still prompts laughter. 02.16.10
