Journaling reads:
If you would have asked me 10 years ago, if I considered my mom my friend, the answer would have been a definite “NO!” Mom was Mom, and there was no gray area in the matter. I was 16 years old, and there was no way I was going to let my mom into my social life. She was there to give me money, give me a hard time about everything I did, or didn’t do, and feed me on occasion. There were times when we got along well, and then there were the times we had all out fights. I am sure I said “I hate you” more times than I care to remember, and I’m sure it hurt her more than she would ever admit to. The one thing I can say about Mom is that she never gave up on me. She, in all her motherly wisdom, never said a harsh word that wasn’t said with the greatest of intentions. She was always my biggest supporter, no matter what it was I did,. Thinking back,, she was the one who gave me the courage to do so many of the things I loved about high school in the end. I look back now, and I see the error of my youth. For so long I had the best friend I dreamt of, right in front of my face. Friends my age came and went with new boyfriends, new schools, new groups, but Mom was right there with me the whole time, encouraging me to do whatever it was my heart desired, and never asking anything in return other than to be treated with respect. I could say I learned to fully appreciate my mom after high school, or even when I first got married, but I would be stretching the truth. I learned to hang out with Mom after high school, when suddenly all my great friends seemed too busy with their own lives, I learned to talk to her after I got married and desperately needed advice, but it wasn’t until I became a mom that I really respected all that she was in my life. First and foremost she will always be my mom, the comforter, the advice giver, and ever the boo boo fixer. But beyond that, she has become by best friend, and all it implies.
