This is the White Rose of York on the Duke of York Pub entrance canopy attached to the Old Town Hall that bears the Red Rose of Lancaster. Historically this is the York Rose so Richard III would have borne this emblem. Richard was killed at Bosworth Field during the War of the Roses. Henry VII became King and the Plantagenents (House of York) gave way to the Tudors (House of Lancaster). Henry VII married Elizabeth of York and then combined the two roses as their emblem into the Tudor Rose (Henry VIII was their youngest son). The fact that these are on two side-by-side buildings reminds me of it's own War of the Roses!
