Are the shelves based on Out Of Reach for little ones? If not, the heaviest items can go directly to the bottom & the misc stuff uptop can be moved somewhere else in the house (if space allows). Labels would probably make a sutle visual difference & would uniform everything a bit more. You could even label the cookbook section - Cookbooking, which actually is a somewhat scrappy term. HTH! ;)
Mainly being used as a room divider, I would suspect. Not sure on cost, but could you add a backing? If not wood, how about a pretty drape or a makeshift screen from something from Craigslist or the Thrift Store? You could even add a pegboard to the back & utilize the space for kitchenware or scrapbooking/children's scrapbooking supplies, if you choose?
This bookshelf is between my dining room and living room.
Very top - misc stuff with no home Top shelf - cookbooks 2nd shelf - photo albums, buttons and pencil crayons 3rd shelf - genealogy (still needs organizing desperately) 4th shelf - completed scrapbooks, box of supplies, quilting books & magazines 5th shelf - binding machine & empty container bottom shelf - file box for genealogy stuff and metal binding for machine above
