This beautiful Border Collie is Rose. I feel like I know her although we've never met in person. She is one of four dogs that grace the home and farm of author Jon Katz. Jon is one of my favorite authors and I probably own every book he's written about his life with dogs. I follow his blog every day so I feel I "know" his beloved dogs.

In addition to being a great writer and storyteller, Jon is an amazing photographer. With his permission, I am using some of his photos for a series of LOs celebrating his (and Maria's) life with four dogs at Bedlam Farm in upstate New York.

Rose is a working dog. She cares little about anything except her work; that work being sheep and Jon. She has literally saved Jon's life on a couple of occasions and he boasts that he could not have survived those first years on the farm without her. Next year, Jon's novel based on life with Rose will be published. It is called "Rose in a Storm" and while it is a work of fiction, there is much that will be true-to-life. Jon is also working on a book about grieving the loss of a pet.

Rose and Jon have been without sheep on the farm for about a year now, but recently, he has decided to bring a few back - at least for the summer. Rose has not been without sheep to herd, but she will be in her glory as Jon returns sheep to her pastures!

I kept this LO very plain. No flowers, no ribbon, no frou-frou. Rose is not a girly-girl dog. She is not warm and fuzzy, although to Jon's amazement, one of the other dogs, Lenore, has taught her how to play and have FUN. Rose is focused and devoted. She is stubborn and diligent. She is alert and prepared. Jon often says, "Rose did a stellar job, as usual," when referring to her helping round up a neighbor's stray cattle, or assisting owners with their sheep for time-trials. Rose's work ethic is above reproach. Everyone who knows her says she is stellar.

TIP: Jon says that when photographing a dog, always go for the eyes. He's done that beautifully here, hasn't he?

I did this LO for the "Beat the Rush" crop last weekend at Pages in Time. The challenge was to do a pet page and use a quote.

Thank you for looking! Karen
