This is the journaling card to, "The 100 Dollar Popcorn Kernel."

February 28 2006.

I had spent the morning planting flowers in my front flower beds, and was just finishing up. As I watered my newly planted additions, Jocelyn ran out of the house, crying.
“Mom, there’s pa-corn (how she pronounces “popcorn”) in my ear.”

“There’s popcorn in your ear?” I replied, a bit confused and curious.

I put down my hose and went with Jocelyn in to the house. Once inside, I looked into her ear. Sure enough, there it was, lodged fairly snugly into her ear canal. After inquiring with daddy and grandma as to my options for removal, I found a pair of small tweezers to see if I could safely remove the kernel. It wouldn’t budge, and I wasn’t going to force it. Ears are one of those precious body parts, you know? It had been suggested that I could try and wash it out with water. I however was apprehensive about trying this, as I was afraid the kernel would expand if it didn’t wash out.

So off to the doctor we went!

The doctor tried to extract it with a pick, then tweezers, then water. Nothing worked. He tried the tweezers again. Still there. By this point, Jocelyn would scream and squirm anytime the doctor would come near her ear. He wanted to use an anesthetic to numb her ear so that she couldn’t feel him trying to get it out. But, we don’t have insurance, and it would have cost a lot of money. So we decided to assemble a “task force” to hold Jocelyn down while the kernel was extracted. Jocelyn was restrained by 3 people, plus the doctor while the tweezers were used again. Still no luck. Finally, the doctor decided that he would just squirt water in her ear for a few minutes to see if it would start to loosen. After a few minutes, the kernel started to give a little. After a little more persistence, the kernel finally washed out!

I had to pay $100.00 for this little visit to the doctor. If you were to ask Jocelyn why she did it, she’d say:

“I just wanted to see if it would fit… And it did!”
