I didn't start out liking my solo this year. When I was told I was going to do the song "Somewhere" from the play "West Side Story," I balked at the idea. I don't like the play "West Side Story" at all and I didn't want to dance to anything from it. Thankfully, my solo instructor found a way to get around that. I still had to dance to the song "Somewhere" but, because he's a fan, it's a version by Barbra Streistand. I actually wound up liking my solo because of the song. The costume had me a bit wary as well. After last year's debacle with three corsets and a six foot tutu, I was a bit worried about what they were going to spring on me this year. I was very glad when they gave me a ballet dress (I never get two of the same kind of costume in ballet...if it's a tutu in the group class, it's a dress for my solo or vice versa). The scarf in the picture isn't just something for the picture. Nope, that darn scarf is a prop I use for my solo...for the entire dance. It's been a learning experience since I have to keep a good hold on the scarf but still look graceful at the same time.
