6-13-10...A 2-point, Black-tailed buck with "velvet" on his antlers. Velvet is a "fuzzy" skin that is filled with blood vessels that covers the new antlers while they are forming/growing. It provides oxygen, nourishment & protects them. As the antlers reach their growth size, in about 2-4 months, the velvet is no longer needed & a ring starts to form at the base of the antlers cutting off the blood supply. As the velvet dries up & falls off the deer often rub their antlers on trees branches or in brushy vegetation to help with the process. This deer & another buck were eating leaves off of my Maple tree...while I was getting the camera the other one took off but this guy was curious so I was able to get this one shot, er photo.
