My entry for this weeks "Weekly Sketch Challenge."

There are so many little lessons that go into preparing a young horse to go under a rider without a fuss. This is the first day that Java learned to pony off another horse. That's her "Uncle John," my farm handyman, and his horse Friday.

Ponying is a way to expand a young horse's world and allow her to see unfamiliar places in the company of another horse, preferrably a seasoned older horse who's a "been there, done that, and designed the t-shirt" kind of veteran. Java spent a couple of days learning how things worked, and then John and I loaded her with our two horses and took her on her first "trail ride" with us.

Ponying also prepares a young horse for the odd perspective of seeing people over their heads and reaching down to their necks, shoulders, and around the tops of their hips. It's a good way to give them the sensation of being ridden without actually riding them.

She's about done with her first 30 days of under saddle work, and she's taken to it with an agreeable disposition and a willing spirit. I'm very happy with how this has gone, and I'm pretty sure that when it's finally time to ride her -- probably late next summer -- she'll be as agreeable about that as she's been about everything else.

The papers here are Basic Gray Lemonade Stand and the flowers are Primas. I punched the lace from some vellum paper I had.

Thanks for taking a peek. I appreciate your comments!
