This was a uranium mine that has now been reclaimed. These concretions occured in the horizon above the mineralized zone. We were searching them for quartz, golden yellow calcite crystals, and other minerals. On the first trip here all the hunters were scared off by the sound of a rattler except an older gentleman and me. We teamed up to crack the concreations open and split the proceeds. I held my splitting maul, by its handle, in a crack while he gave it a good whack with his sledge hammer. When the concretions split he took that which fell his way and I got what fell my way. We each filled several 5 gallon buckets. Everyone else got nothing. I didn't give up because I figured I was making so much noise the snakes were long gone or would make a wide berth around me. This is a trip Tim and I made with some friends. It was the last time I went.

I cut the matting out and placed the photos underneath it. Wow, it sure took a long time. Not doing that again.
