Give a Cheer
Vintage and current photos combined with family-favorite recipes inspired this keepsake. I want my kids to know their ancestors better and appreciate how they prepared food and lived their lives. We have a recipe box full of recipes from grandparents, great-grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins that we've enjoyed for years. We also have some treasured photos of grandmothers baking/cooking and grandfathers grilling. When I saw the Crate Paper Restoration collection a light went on in my head. I saw how it was perfect to help me create a useful recipe album as well as a treasured family heirloom. The vintage look and feel of this collection is updated and appeals to younger cooks today - it's full of French flair.
The project began with collecting photos to make sure there was at least one for each significant relative on my side of the family and my husbands. Next, I created the section layouts and finished with finding recipes and copying them all by hand. I contacted extended family members and my kids in-laws and asked if they'd contribute yummy recipes so my family could remember them in a special way.
Altering the American Crafts Album was the most enjoyable part of this project for me. Here's what I did:
1) Paint spine and distress with Restoration rub ons and Tim Holtz stamps. I used Landscape Green with some Sky Blue and Traditional Tan mixed in until it coordinated with the patterned paper.
2) Glue patterned papers to the outside front and back covers wrapping to the inside. Then cover the wrapped edges on the inside with pieces of another patterned paper that is cut just smaller than the album dimensions.
3) Add sticker borders (secure brads to the top layer) where painted area and papers meet on outside cover
4) Add chipboard pieces to outside spine. The letter "F" I used was one I had on hand that's been discontinued.
5) Ink edges and inside where desired. I added a few coffee cups stains on the inside where a cup might have accidentally rested while viewing the book.
6) Spray album with Krylon Clear Acrylic spray
7) Cover entire album with Mod Podge Matte
8) Spray with Krylon one more time
Now I had a beautiful album to enjoy as I began creating photo layouts/recipe sections and the tedious process of handwriting recipes.
Can you keep a secret? I've made four of these albums for each of my grown kids for Christmas this year. I'm so excited to see the looks on their faces and feel the satisfaction of knowing I've passed on something useful. I did color copy the recipes to save hours of time and writer's cramp.
