This picture was taken in 1901. My great grandmother is the baby in her mother's arms. The others in the photo are her father, both sets of my great grandmothers grandparents, aunt and uncle and older brother. They were Croatians living in the Austria- Hungary empire and enjoyed more political freedoms than most ethnic minorities at the time. After WW1 Austria- Hungary was split apart and Croations lost the higher status they had previously enjoyed. It was shortly after WW1 that my Great Grandmother and her husband moved to the US with my grandmother who was 2 at the time.
