Wow, I didn't know what I was getting into. For my first uglies challenge I used the American Flag paper as a matting and I used a few flags as embellies around the pics. From the shaving paper I used the bandages and the word ouch since the desert is pointy. I also used the embellie. I covered the chip board and used bandage colored alphas to spell out Desert Lives (our fave exhibit at the zoo). The Journaling reads. The United States is enormous, and I have always appreciated its vastness. My heart has been a travelling one as long as I can remember and some of my favorite adventures involve getting in the car and going. But, had you told me I was going to raise my child somewhere other than my sweet oasis of Michigan I would have never believed you. I never imagined my child would grow up far away from the soft, white sand beaches, blaze red and orange sunsets, towering oak and maple trees. Every child in my family of the last four generations has dipped their toes in the cool, clean waters of Lake Michigan; I'm surprised Genevieve isn't doing the same.

Instead we are raising Genevieve in the Sonoran Desert, an incredibly inhospitable environment. The landscape is surreal, everything is pointy, venomous, or lava hot. The opportunities for injury are endless. We are doing well though, Genevieve is thriving in these tough conditions. She has the wide open places of the mountains to explore, the cacti and critters provide lessons of flora and fauna. There are countless things in the Valley we do to enrich this child's life, things that only the urban setting can offer. Her America is profoundly different than mine, I only hope her America serves her as well as mine has served me.
