Journaling: Analyzing my style is not an easy task for me. It tends to be a bit eclectic because I’m easily influenced by the immensely talented scrappers at DD. When I see something on a page that I like, I want to include it on my next page. But with some thought, I have begun to see some threads in my pages which, I guess, amounts to my style.

I love a template, probably because I’m not completely confident with my own design techniques. If someone much more talented than I will give me the plan, I’ll scrap it.

I tend to like straight lines, and left to my own devices, I’d probably make every page very linear. I will occasionally break out of the box, however, and use a curve, a circle, or an artsy mask.

Most of my pages are multi-photo, which, no doubt, stems from my paper scrapping days when I totally didn’t get scrapping a page containing only one picture. Now I actually enjoy doing one-photo pages from time to time -- ah, the beauty of digital!

I like multiple mats. The finished look they give to a page appeals to me, and I like to fasten them down with stitching.

I absolutely LOVE color, cardstock, and patterned paper; and I know I use them better than I did when I began paper scrapping. Then, if I liked a particular paper or color, by golly it was going on the page whether or not it complemented the pictures. Once I learned the principle of pulling colors from my pictures, it was amazing how much better I liked my pages. I would still like to be Debbie Hodge when it comes to using patterned paper, but I’m a work in progress.

Alphas, word art, and flourishes make me positively giddy. Most of my titles are made with alphas -- I love them all: acrylic, chipboard, jelly, stamped. Give me an alpha, and I’m a happy girl. I’ve always loved quotes which probably accounts for my love of word art. Frequently I find that word art is just that perfect little touch to finish a page. Maybe my love of flourishes is a revolt against all the straight lines that I usually use. I guess my right brain is trying to tell me something.

Besides pictures, some elements that show up on most of my pages are a title, journaling, and the date. I can hardly do a page without including these items. My daughter-in-law had to MAKE me journal when I first began paper scrapping. I was all about slapping paper and pictures on a page. Now, as I get older (and forget more things), I’m grateful for the journaling to remind me of where we’ve been and what we’ve done.

I so wish I had discovered scrapping when my sons were little -- not that I would have had the time or money to indulge in it, but I’m so glad Katie and Sam’s lives have been well documented from the moment they were born. It’s part of my legacy to them. 10.29.10
