Back in 1952, most people called my mother Sissy. A few still do. Another thing I’ve been told about the ‘50s is that families didn’t have a lot of extra money for things like toys. I’ve listened many times to a particular story of Mom and her brother digging in the dirt under the porch with spoons when there was nothing else to do.

My mother was the only young girl in her neighborhood so she didn’t exactly make up for a lack of toys with playmates. But she did have Blackie. He was invited to a lot of tea parties, wore hand-me-down doll clothes and got pushed around in a wobbly baby buggy for hours. Blackie got a lot of attention and a lot of hugs.
After all... Hugs are free!
