SMOKE!

When I first saw the smoke cloud, I was on my way home from work. I knew it was too close. The closer I got to my house, the closer it looked.

I started thinking out my evacuation plan - get the trailer hitched up, load the horses, turn out the chickens, get the pictures, scrapbooks, and computer, grab the dog and a change of underwear, get the important documents from the safe file...

It wasn't until I was home that I realized I had a little breathing room - literally. I got out of the truck and didn't smell smoke, which means that it's moving the other direction. As long as the wind doesn't shift, we'll be ok.

But it's still too close for comfort. DH came past the damage path on his way home from work. It started about a mile south of our house, and it's easily three miles across at this point. It's not in a heavily populated area, but there are homes there, and there will - most probably - be families without a roof tonight.

My first thought is that I'm very thankful I'm not one of them. And my second one is that I feel a little guilty about being one of the lucky ones.
