Since I live with a husband and 2 cats in a 1 bedroom apartment I have serious space constraints. And I only started scrapbooking in August 2005 so I don't have very much either.
I thoroughly HATE clutter, disorganization and since everything is on display I also wanted it to be "pretty" not just functional as everything is on part of a bookcase in my living room.
The system I devised uses photo boxes. Each box is color coded so I can grab exactly the right one without reading the label - but they are labeled -
Tool Box - all of my must haves for each page like pens, chalk, most common adhesives, Xacto knife, Coluzzle, eyelet setter & hammer, etc. Attachments - eyelets, brads, snaps, etc. all arranged in Making Memories-style plastic side open "tins" Adhesives - Xyron 150, foam tape, vellum tape, spare tape cartridges, wet glues, glue sticks, etc. Rubber Stamps - and inkpads too Tools - punches, decorative scissors, dymo label machine, etc. Ribbon - put on either Cropper Hopper "bobbins" or on spools slide onto a dowel within the box Embellishments - 3D stickers, chipboard, vellum quotes, buttons, etc. Scraps - anything too large for the box gets stored with the full size sheets
Eventually I am going to have to add more photo boxes and split things up further but for now this works great. On top of these boxes I have my large paper trimmer & several Generations envelopes with layouts in progress. Since I was a painter, beadworker & all-purpose crafter long before getting into scrapbooking I have all my paints, beads, papermaking supplies, etc. in individual plastic boxes on a closet shelf - along with large scrapbook items like my Xyron 510.
My paper is stored in a box by Scrapbook Solutions that looks like a large photo box. I have it only half full & it's holding at least 600 sheets. The red photo boxes next to it are for photos and pages. The bottom one is a box of photos I am sorting (I have a few more hanging out in the closet) and the one on the top holds photo envelopes & memorabilia. I sort all my photos into layouts or albums and place all of these (along with notes & ideas written on note cards) into each envelope. That way when I want to do a layout I have everything in one place.
At the end of the shelf I have a Cropper Hopper that holds my smaller trimmer, cutting mats, rulers, and an accordion file filled with all my stickers.
On an adjoining bookcase I have all my albums and binders. One binder holds templates in sheet protectors. Another holds all my ideas and sketches and one holds magazine clippings as I don’t like saving old magazines - takes up too much room.
All of my scrapbooking is done on my coffee table in or at my dining table.
