Journaling Reads: Skagway is a very touristy town that caters to the many cruise ships that frequent its shores from May to October. The tourism department has done a nice job recreating the gold rush look and feel of the 1890's. There are dancing girls hanging out saloon windows; there are horses, carriages and old cars too. Everyone is dressed in period costumes.

I wandered off the beaten path and found a small stream where a young woman in waders holding a huge net was grabbing salmon out of the stream and putting them in cages.

While she worked, I asked her about what she was doing. I learned that her name is Meredith Marchioni and she works for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. She was collecting these salmon and "imprinting" them in this creek so they'll come back next year to hatch their young. She explained that salmon will remember the smell of the creek.

It's a conservation efforts as well as part of her Ph.D. program in Fisheries Anthropology. (Who knew such a degree existed!) She works with fisherman and the state legislation to insure the proper fish population for the ecology of Alaska.

I was really impressed. What an important thing to be doing. And here she was standing in thigh high water physically moving these fish with her own hands. That's real commitment to saving the environment. What an amazing woman.
