When you take these boxes from the post office and use them for any other purpose than mailing them Priority Mail it is a violation. If someone told you otherwise they are WRONG. Why people think it is okay amazes me. This should be removed by scrapbook.com or they are condoning it.
The dollar store where I live has these boxes. I wouldn't use them from a post office unless they were used. I would feel too guilty in taking them. Several of the post offices in go to no longer let you just take the boxes anymore or they have the boxes up near the counter so they can see you take them.
I use the post office boxes. Perfect size and they are free. I was even told by the postal office worker that by law once they leave the building and in your hands you can do whatever with them. Also LannaMichelle is very incorrect and is misleading you. So please ignore the wrong information she posted. This idea is not only awesome but saves money.
I just wanted to suggest that if you're worried about the weight of paper bowing the boxes, try standing them up on the side. I prefer my scrapbook papers to be upright so that I can rifle through them easier. If you're using all one color horizontal may be fine but when going through my printed papers it's easier to flip through them all and see what I have if they're upright.
I thought I would add. I buy and sell clothes so I get the bigger boxes a lot in mail so I did boxes for 12x12 paper and so it didn't bow in the middle I had old stir sticks with a little paint on them and some without. I used two on top of each box to go across each box and hot glue it there to keep the box on top of that one from bowing down. Just a suggestion:)
Like every one else I would like to see the finished project. What kind of paper would you use to cover it so you don't get ridges from the duct tape? Or, maybe you cover it all in strips of duct tape butted together? I'd love it if someone could show a finished one.
I love this ides, but I agree....use only those that are 'used - recyled'. When I went to a class on saling on E-Bay the post office personnel where there. They said that the post office becomes very upset when people use thier boxes for other things than mailing. If you use a 'used - recycled' box...that is ok...but when you go to the post office just to get the boxes for your craft or 'other' items, they become upset and at times will go after the person who is not using them for postal services. One lady told us that when she was at a fish market, she notcied one of the venders using a lot of these 'free' boxes from the post office.... needless to say she reported this vender to the post office 'authorites'. She said that the post office did an investagation on the fish market vender...not sure what came out of it. We were told that if people contintue to use these 'free' boxes for non-maiing the post office might just start charging for these boxes.
Coffeechic is correct - the USPS does NOT receive tax dollars. They get their money from selling stamps, shipping services. I do not know where Qweenofthecrop and Beccalynne go, but the post offices I've been to do not charge for flat rate shipping boxes (until you actually mail them) -- maybe they're going to contract stations which aren't run by actual USPS employees.
I work in a Walmart Vision Center and we get 2 of these boxes delivered to us, usually 5 days a week. If you ask your local VC to save the boxes for you, I'm sure they would. We either recycle them at store level or you can recycle them into great paper holders, either way they get recycled!! I used them to make paper holders also, but did mine vertically, slicing them on the diagonal and getting 2 holders per box.
This is a great idea. I don't know about everyone else's PO but mine charges for shipping boxes depending ion the size. So they are not paid for by tax dollars as LannaMichelle posted.
I really hope that this is a recycling share for USED postal boxes. These boxes are paid for by out tax dollars, and encouraging the use of new is wrong, and wasteful. These boxes are provided for the service of mailing ONLY. Please amend your posts to indicate RECYCLED boxes.
