Dear Ely,

Growing up, I was not the type of girl who dreamed about being a mommy and having kids. My favorite games didn’t include playing “house.” Although I did have a bean-bag froggy that I treated like a baby after my sister was born, as I got older, my baby dolls became useful for other activities, like “performing medical procedures.” I imagined that one day I would be a veterinarian who helped sick animals, especially horses. Of course, I did want to get married and have children at some point, but not until I had accomplished these other goals of mine.

It’s amazing how you can make plans, but God knows what’s best for you. Since I developed allergies for pretty much every kind of animal, veterinary medicine wasn’t for me. Instead, in college, I delved into art, so much so that I slept and ate very little. Your daddy and I got married, we moved to Hawaii, and there I discovered my passion for children. I became a middle school teacher and returned to college to get my certification.

Not long into our marriage, even before becoming a teacher, I started to long for a baby. Your daddy and I were in Hawaii for about a year when we decided to try to conceive. Two years and many problems later, you were created. In July 2005, we welcomed you into our world, and my life was forever changed. Being a mommy, your mommy, is the most satisfying “job” I’ve ever had. Now I know why God purposed for women to be mommies. My heart feels more deeply than ever before. Joy when you are laughing. Pain when you are hurting. Frustration when you can’t yet do what you want to do. Although I still love pursuing my hobbies and interests, being your mommy far surpasses the fulfillment of any other passion of mine. I love being your Mommy, my baby boy!
