this layout chronicles the transformation of once plain walls to a painted paradise.

the title consists of red label tape, shimmering glass bead covered strawberries with letters underneath, circular portions from ki memories "chill out" paper with tiny stamped letters topped with crystal effects and heidi swapp letters edged in glass beads.

the sleeping children were doing just that- every time i painted.

the journaling is a tri-fold pullout from the finished mural picture. (notice the little ribbon tab in the bottom left corner) it reads...

I think I still haven’t gotten over the fact that for 6 months we believed we were moving from St. Louis to Fort Lauderdale, in other words to my personal dream land of sand, surf and sun. And then came the phone call, “the company was just bought out, and the headquarters will be in Owasso, Oklahoma.” Aside from Alaska the mental image Oklahoma brought to mind was about as far away from Florida as I could get! Forget the coconuts and tropical birds, we were headed to cow pasture and tumbleweeds. A personal nightmare, but I got over it. I pulled myself up by the proverbial boot -straps, and said to myself, “If we can’t live near the beach, bring the beach to us.” And as soon as I saw my daughters newest storybook: Strawberry Shortcake’s Sea-berry Mystery I knew exactly that the once “Oklahoma State University” bedroom, turned pink/purple pastel, would be the ultimate island oasis. The project began on the girlies’ 4th birthday, I drove 40 minutes to purchase 2 low beds from another twin mom, we returned home and I began the transformation of dismantling their high sided daybeds and constructing their new ones. I planned the illustrations to use from the book and which walls to splash with color. The actual painting began during naptime, and that is how it continued. Every naptime and every night I would paint while they were sleeping. It was fun to watch them and it was amazing to witness the almost magnetic bond they have with each other even in sleep. More often then not they were touching each other with a foot or a hand, and then there were the times that I was amazed they don’t ever fall out of bed, the wiggles around so much. I’ll probably never know if they woke up sometimes and watched me painting, but several mornings they commented, “mommy, I dreamt you painted this.” Whether they really did open their eyes or simply fell asleep wondering what it would look like when they saw it next, I believe the characters as well as the Sienna and Sierra’s were berry berry sweet!
