Since I was little I have always wanted to see whales. They seemed like such wonderful, gentle, amazing creatures. In July of 2004 I finally got the chance to see them. I drove to Newfoundland for 2 weeks on my own and had a terrific experience. My first whale sighting was a minke whale in Cape Breton, NS. Then, I saw my first humpback whale in Bay Bulls, NFL. There were several of them feeding together and it was truly amazing to see these large creatures swim around us. The captain even guided me to watch for where they would surface, seeing my long lens and realizing that I was serious about getting great shots. The best shots I got happened toward the end of the trip, in Lans Aux Meadows. We had traveled out to sea to see an enormous iceberg (seen here) and swimming around us was a humpback whale. It came very close to our boat which enabled me to get great tail shots! The whale was so close you could almost touch it!
