JOURNALING:
"This is one of those memories that I’ve kept with me through the years. I was about 8 years old and Mom and I just got up one morning and headed out on the road with no destination. I EVENTUALLY saw a sign for “Ghost Town In The Sky” and asked if we could go . . . and we did. I loved it then and looking back, I love it even more today. We rode a huge ski-lift to the top of the mountain in Maggie Valley, NC where the “ghost town” was. There were buildings created to resemble an old ghost town, complete with cowboys, Indians, miners and can-can dancers. They even had staged gun fights in the street between the buildings. There were rides, old-fashioned photos and much more. Mom was a great sport and had this photo taken of us “in jail” and I’ve kept it with me ever since. Even though the ghost town was a smaller “amusement park” and couldn’t stand up to places like Kings Dominion or Great Adventure, I still loved it and as I got older, I knew I wanted to take my own daughters there. Unfortunately, at the time of this writing (2/04), Ghost Town In The Sky is closed this season and from all accounts, 40 years after its opening date, is now up for sale. I’m heartbroken that I possibly may not get to take my girls to see this amazing and incredible fun-park. I truly wanted them to experience the ride to the top of the mountain and looking out over the small town of Maggie Valley 2,000 feet below. I wanted to be able to have a photo like this taken with them like I did with my Mom. I guess all I can hope for is that someone will purchase the park and allow it to be what it was before . . . somewhere that you can truly let your imagination run wild, spend a fun time with your family and have memories to cherish just like this one.
