After lunch we cleaned up and at 3:30 climbed into a taxi which was sent by the dentist's office. We both had check-ups and I had a heavy cleaning while Bill was chauffeured by the staff to another clinic for more intense x-rays.

My dental report wasn't bad. The dentist asked showed Bill everything in my mouth and explained to him what needed to be done. Even though he recommended replacing the existing two crowns which are over 40 years and putting in two additional crowns, (also on the bottom) he said most important for me was a good cleaning. Nothing else was critical at this time.

Then Bill got his checkup. When the dentist was through examining him he called me over and showed me everything he felt should be done. He wiggled Bill's bridges so I could see that two more were loose and explained everything that needed to be done and even drew diagrams for me. We knew a bridge had broken on the lower left side, in fact it had crumbled completely out. We weren't aware that two more bridges had deteriorated and were ready to crumble! That would have caused the bridge in front to break because the upper right bridge and upper front bridge were in one piece. I didn't realize how many other problems Bill was having in his mouth until the dentist pointed everything out to me.

His final recommendation was to get Bill's work completely done – and some of the problems could not be determined until he removed most of the existing dental work when Bill was in surgery. He recommended that I wait to do mine because he wanted to focus on Bill. Mine was really insignificant compared to the work Bill needed.

None of Bill's could be postponed. We scheduled the oral surgery for the next morning. We asked the dentist if Bill would be okay after the surgery because he would be taking the bus back to the hotel afterwards. The dentist said he would be fine to take the bus by himself, since Bill opted to do all the work with Novocain rather than a general anesthetic.

Then the dentist asked us, “Isn't Henri going to be here for the surgery? She would find it quite interesting to watch – its really fascinating surgery.” I told him, “No, I really don't need to watch.” Bill told him he was going to leave me at the hotel since there was no need for me to sit in the waiting room most of the day. So the plan was for Bill to take the bus back to the hotel, although if he was not in a condition to do that a cab would be arranged to get him back to the hotel or come get me if there was an emergency.

After we left the dentists office we walked around the Plaza of the America's (the shopping mall where the dentist's office was located) and decided on a steak buffet restaurant for dinner. I pigged out on the chicken soup. I love Mexican chicken soup with rice and I could eat it every day of my life. Their's was probably the best I've ever had! I would have been happy if I had nothing on my plate, just several bowls of Mexican chicken soup!

Thursday, February 3rd – We got up early and Bill took a bus to the dentist office. He would be there most of day so we decided I would stay in our hotel. I ordered chicken soup from room service so I wouldn't have to leave the room in case I got a call from the dentist's office. (The hotel soup was okay, but didn't compare to the chicken soup at the restaurant the night before!)

The work was extensive. They removed two of the three remaining bridges which included the front teeth, pulled a few back teeth, including one huge molar and 7 new mini-implants had been added. When bridges were removed they found that two of the existing implants were not stable so they had to be removed and replaced with two new regular implants so he had 7 mini implants done and 2 regular implants.

He returned to the hotel with a sore mouth full of stitches. He had very sore jaws from having his mouth open for so long while they did the surgery. I can't believe he had so much work done with only Novocain but that was his choice but he preferred not to be put to sleep! It was also Bill choice to have the surgery done on both sides of his mouth in one day instead of breaking it up. The dentist later told me that Bill was a really tough guy, which I already knew.

One the way to the bus stop he went to the pharmacy for his prescriptions (pain killers, inflammation pills, and antibiotics), and he also stopped at the grocery store on and bought grapes to surprise me. He said he had an awful time trying to eat one to see if it was sweet enough for me. He also bought me a bag of Doritos and juice for both of us. (Grape for me – guabanaba for him, which he loves.)

We went to the hotel restaurant about 6:00 for chicken soup but they told us it was only on the lunch menu everyday. We told them that Bill had extensive oral surgery and wanted the soup but they refused to bend the rules and sell it to us. They said they could only sell the chicken soup to us at lunchtime.

Then it got even sillier. Bill decided he could possibly eat pasta so we wanted to order spaghetti to take to our room. Bill didn't know for sure if he would be able to eat at all, and if he could he know it would be very difficult and slow. The hotel restaurant rule is that you can't take food from the restaurant to your room. If you want to eat in your rooms it has to come from room service and it costs more for the same items. If you order it physically in the restaurant, you have to eat it in the restaurant. You can not order it and have it put in a to-go box. We told them to forget it we would find somewhere else to eat.

We walked to the restaurant in the hotel next door and I had fajitas and Bill had naked buffalo wings with no hot sauce which were easy enough for him to eat when he picked the chicken from the bones. It took him a long time to eat, but he was able to finish them. Before we ordered, we asked if we could take them with us if he had too much trouble eating them and they said they would be happy to box them up for him so he could eat them in our room. But that wasn't necessary.
