Journaling: After our tour of Schonbrunn, we rode the U back to the city and on to the Naschmarkt. This area has been home to a produce market for over a century. Its name translates roughly as Munchies Market, and it boasts both gourmet and exotic foods. The photo in the center on the opposite page shows a vendor slicing off kebap meat. They stack all sorts of meat on the spit and press it together before cooking it. Then they slice it to order. The vendors were very generous with the samples, and we ended up buying falafel, hummus, dried fruit, and Coke Lights for lunch. One vendor was a bad boy and gave me an olive stuffed with a red hot chili pepper. I thought my mouth would never cool down. The star of lunch was the dried apple seasoned with honey. It was so good that I wished later we had bought a bigger bag of it. YUM! 05.11.11
