Journaling: After lunch, we used our handy three-day subway passes to go to the Kunsthistorisches Museum which contains works that once belonged to the Habsburgs. We saw art by Breughel, Titian, Raphael, Caravaggio, and Rembrandt. We happened upon an artist making a copy of one of Breughel’s works, and it was cool to see her process. The most astonishing artwork, however, was a special exhibit by Jan Fabre. His pieces were sprinkled throughout the museum; and after studying them, I jokingly said to Alice that they looked like ballpoint ink scratches on butcher paper. Imagine my surprise when I read that the medium was BIC PEN ON PAPER. Fabre was nothing if not versatile; he also used his Bic on artificial silk (massive hangings that we thought were hiding construction) and wood (a huge catafalque in the lobby). I can just hear his excitement when the semi pulled up with his order of Bics. We’re still scratching our heads. 05.11.11
