Journaling: We stopped for a snack in Stephansplatz before going into St. Stephan’s Cathedral, known as ‘the needle around which Vienna spins.’ This is the third church to stand on this spot, and the present structure dates from 1300-1450. At the end of World War II, nearby buildings were bombed, and the embers set fire to the cathedral rooftop which collapsed into the nave. The fire, which raged for two days, caused the stained-glass windows to blow out. The nave is longer than a football field and nine stories tall. When we tour cathedrals, I can never pass up the opportunity of shooting the soaring Gothic interiors and the ever-present candles. 05.12.11
