Journaling: On our first walk around Budapest, we came upon St. Istvan’s Basilica. Although Rick calls it not ‘that compelling inside,’ I thought it was grand. The organ pipes and dome were impressive, and the rich gold on the archways was beautiful. Instead of Jesus, Istvan (Stephen), Hungary’s first Christian king, stands above the high altar. His ‘holy right hand’ is a treasured relic displayed in a small chapel. We waited for someone to pay the 200-forint fee to light the case, but it still wasn’t easy to make it out. Back outside, we studied the inscription over the central arch: Ego sum via veritas et vita. Latin scholars we are not, but we finally divined the translation: I am the way, the truth, and the life. Amen! 05.13.11
