Journaling: That afternoon, we had tickets for a tour of the Hungarian State Opera House, located just across the street from our hotel. When the building was constructed in the 1890s, Hungarians wanted to put their city on the map. Habsburg Emperor Franz Joseph provided half the funds with the stipulation that it not be bigger than the Staatsoper in Vienna. The architect followed the letter of the law but made it much more opulent and used primarily Hungarian materials. The Emperor was not amused. Our tour ended with a mini concert of snippets from Mozart and Bizet. Don was not amused. 05.15.11
