Journaling: Most of our tour was spent at Auschwitz, which, because of the brick buildings, is better preserved than nearby Birkenau. But for me, the vast silence of Birkenau was more haunting and sobering than the sturdy brick buildings of Auschwitz. There was such incongruity in bright blue skies and green grass and the unimaginable atrocities of the camp.
Under the direction of the Nazis in charge, Birkenau was hastily built by inmates to handle the horrific goals of the Final Solution. It is 20 times larger than Auschwitz, and the remaining barracks chimneys stretch as far as the eye can see. We saw a rail car from the period that surprised us by how small it seemed compared to modern railroad cars. As we walked toward the back of the camp, Lukasz told us about courageous camp inmates who gathered materials for over a year in order to blow up one of the crematoria; they were executed for their actions. Later he showed us the ruins of Crematoria III, destroyed by the Nazis as the Soviets advanced on the camp in January 1945.
Our final stop was the memorial to the victims with plaques from countries around the world. And Lukasz saved the most dramatic moment for last when he told us that his great-grandfather had been an inmate at Auschwitz for 6 months before being transferred to Mauthausen in Austria where he survived the war. 05.18.11
