The entire presentation was so educational. We learned everything there was to know about seahorses and then some.

• The wild seahorse population is becoming extinct because of several factors.
(1) They are captured for home aquariums and pet store sell wild seahorses, although they are lucky if they keep them alive for even a few weeks.
(2) Pollution – it is taking a very serious toll on these magnificent creatures
(3) They are being harvested in Asian counties, dried, and sold as a natural
Viagara. They are in such demand for this purpose that is enough to contribute to the seahorses' eventual demise in the ocean.

• Wild only live in captivity for a few weeks; rarely even a month. In the ocean they live an average of 5 years. Some of the ones raised at Ocean Rider are 11 years old and still counting.

• Seahorses are completely monogamous in the wild. However, in captivity the completely abandon that line of thinking and behave as swinging singles.

• The Sea dragons (they look like seahorses covered in leaves) sell for $20,000 each! That is $40,000 a pair (no wonder aquarium admissions are so expensive. In the wild sea dragons have an average life span of 1 year so aquariums have to constantly replace their sea dragons. However, at Ocean Rider they have some that are 4 years old and counting.

• Sea dragons have never been successfully bed in captivity. One pair at Ocean Rider is pregnant for the first time and they are hopeful that they will have a nursery full of healthy sea dragons in the near future.

• Seahorses cannot open their mouths; they suck in food and nutrients – their little snouts operate as straws.

• Male seahorses are the ones who carry the babies in their pouch. They only require a resting or recuperation time for 2 minutes after delivery and they are available to become pregnant again.
