Page 2 - the story. Journaling as follows: Joseph Miller was born April 11, 1851 in Lee County, Iowa to John and
Anna Raber Miller. Maggie Eicher, daughter of Martin and Barbara
Roth Eicher was born October 4, 1856 in Henry County, Iowa. They were
married November 25, 1875 in Henry County. Four of Joseph’s brothers
also married “Eicher girls”. Those four were sisters. My great-great
grandma was a first cousin to them. In 1881 the family moved to Milford,
Nebraska, where two of Maggie’s brothers already lived. They were of
the Mennonite faith and all the children were raised in the church.
Joseph was a farmer. Standing in the back row are Emma and my great-
grandfather, William. Joseph is holding the baby Cora (Aunt Ida had not
yet made her appearance). The two boys standing on either side of Maggie
are Harry and Edward, and Elmer is seated. Elmer is the only one of the
children who died young, at age nine, of scarlet fever. My Grandad Homer
knew his grandpa well, and even when he was in his 80s, could still become
furious at how his grandpa was treated in his last years. Joseph probably
suffered from what we now know as Alzheimer’s. Grandad Homer told me
how Aunt Ida’s husband sold Joseph’s horse, because in his later years,
Joseph would ride Bird (yes the horse) around the countryside. Her husband
decided someday Joseph would get lost and not come home, so sold the horse.
Grandad would say, “He didn’t have to go and do that. Grandpa would
never have gotten lost --- Bird knew the way home”. This was no doubt
true, and Aunt Ida’s husband was never a favorite of any of the family.
Maggie was known for her stalwart faith, her work in the church, and her
beautiful voice. My father and his cousins would always talk about their
great-grandma’s beautiful singing voice -- and of how she was their teacher
in Sunday School. Joseph died in 1918 and Maggie in 1935
