The red insignia in the background is actually a piece from the original album cover that I just couldn't throw away. When I took the cover apart, it wasn't filled with the nice fiber fill we use today. It was padded with a straw-like fiber that felt real coarse and rough. The broken string is actually part of the tie that held his album together.

Journaling reads "Although I can justify that it does seem appropriate for historical significance, I must admit that I do feel guilty as I dismantle Dad’s old, tattered, dark red WWII photo album to include as part of this scrapbook. For many years, we (as youngsters), were forbidden to examine its contents due to the sensitive nature of the photos. War, after all, was “R” rated and inappropriate for young children to view.

The album has a distinctive aroma – that characteristic smell of an heirloom that has been stashed away for many years in a cardboard box in some dark, damp cupboard or basement. The pages are black and brittle and the pictures are held in place with black photo corners (which I hope to use in this new format) appropriate for the period.

My intention now is not to deface or destroy the keepsake but to preserve the photos and history for future generations. I sincerely hope I can do so with the respect and dignity they so deserve. There are people in the photos I can’t identify and places and battles I can’t describe. And, sad to say, few remain that can assist me through the process. But the historical significance remains.

This is a work-in-progress. I will continue to add information throughout the album as I learn more about those days and times. I welcome my descendents to do the same."
